Celebrating the life of

Wallace Dorough Moye, Sr.

September 27, 1935 - June 27, 2023

Wallace Dorough Moye, Sr.

Wallace Dorough Moye, Sr.  died peacefully on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

Wallace was born in Columbus, GA on September 27, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, Winnie Pearl Dorough and Isaac Newton Moye; his wife of 50 years, Ann Pearce Moye; grandson, Tyler Christopher Moore; and a sister, Jeanetta Moye Hay.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Whitaker Moye; two daughters, Melodie Moye Moore, and Melissa Moye Metzger (Marvin); son, W.D. Moye, Jr. (Angie); granddaughter, Caitlin Pearl Moye; and a step granddaughter, Peyton Smith.

Wallace was a salesman to the core. Wallace taught his children many things, but always to be a hard worker in life.  Wallace’s first job was at a snowball and snack shop on Barnard Street when he was just nine years old. At 12, Wallace began delivering blocks of ice to homes. He also worked at a bicycle repair shop fixing bikes from his wheelchair after a surgery to fix his hip that was growing incorrectly. As an adult, Wallace began his career in sewing machines and was the youngest assistant manager at Atlas Sewing Centers. Wallace also laughingly said, He was the worst store manager they ever had in Raleigh, NC. He opened his own store, Moye’s Sewing Center in 1961 with his wife, Ann. He also was very proud of creating his own brand, The Moye Machines and traveled to Japan to secure these models. Besides Japan, Wallace through work traveled to many countries often taking his son.

He was former president and the longest serving board member of Savannah Ambucs. He was a candidate for National Mr. Ambuc for his work on Ambuc Stadium on Sallie Mood Drive. Wallace brought up the idea of an Exceptional Bowling League to the Savannah Ambucs. His children have many great memories bowling with these exceptional bowlers on Saturdays.

Wallace was a two-time president of Forest City Gun Club. He was a World Skeet Shoot Champion in 20 and 12 gauge in 1976 and 1977. His children also have memories of punching out primers and loading shells at home for him. He was an avid photographer of nature. He used to email sunrises every morning to his children and many others. He passed his love for cars and speed to his children… well two of his children anyway.

Wallace loved a good joke, loved a good time, and loved to dance. He will be greatly missed by his familyl and friends. His children would also like to thank Margaret for her love and care for Wallace over these past few years making it possible to stay in his home happy and comfortable.

Visitation will be Friday, June 30, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with the service following at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Wallace’s memory to Savannah Ambucs, P.O. Box 15111, Savannah, GA 31416.

The passing of a legend! Wallace was a great man that will be sorely missed by all that knew him. When I was a teenager just learning to handle a shotgun, he always treated my as just another adult at the club. I always enjoyed his great jokes and loved seeing that grin of his when he brightened the doors at Driftaway! My prayers are with the Moye family. Dwell on the find memories of good times and know there were many!

- Robyn Quattlebaum, Savannah, Georgia

I met Wallace at the Candler pool where he enjoyed water aerobics. I later met Margaret and was so happy when they got engaged. Wallace was always smiling, telling me a joke and one of the nicest gentleman I have met. He was one of my many "pool peeps" that I greeted here at the Heart and Lung building. Margaret and family, please know that ya'll are in my prayers and I know Wallace is up in heaven telling his jokes and dancing away!

Prayers for Melodies, Melissa, WD, and Margaret. As a teenager, I often took my mom's sewing machine to be fixed. The only instructions I had were to tell Mr. Moye it was Mrs. Sheehan's machine and 2 days later it was good as new. As an adult I got to be friends with Wallace when I joined Savannah AMBUCS. We traveled many places together and always had lots of fun. His support of AMBUCS and myself was unwavering. He had a profound impact on me. I told someone the other day that I don't know anyone who enjoyed life more! Test in Peace Wallace
